Add Multiple Languages In Prestashop

PrestaShop includes support for dozens of languages, which makes it easy to internationalize your shop. After installing Prestashop in any language, you can install other languages as well for your store later on.

In this blog, I’ll explain you step by step how you can install more languages and how you can add translations for those languages in the PrestaShop. The steps are pretty simple and don’t require programming skills:

Step 1 - Import a new Language pack:

Language packs for all countries are not loaded during PrestaShop installation by default. We need to import a language pack if it is not loaded by default.

Note: Please ignore the steps below if your language pack is already installed in PrestaShop.

  • Login to your Administrator panel.
  • On the left menu bar, click Localization, and then click Localization.
  • Select the localization package that you want to import.
  • Select content to import and then click on the Import button.

Step 2 - Add a new Language:

To add a language in PrestaShop, follow these steps:

  • On the left menu bar, click Localization, and then click Translations.
  • Under Add/Update a language section, use the list box to select the language you want to add.
  • Click Add or update a language. Language is added to your store.

Step 3 - Translate terms:

Follow the steps below to translate terms:

  • On the left menu bar, click Localization, and then click Translations.
  • Under MODIFY TRANSLATIONS ? Select type of translation ? Selects your theme ? Select your language ? Click on the “Modify” button.

    • Front office translations. The text is visible to your customers.
    • Back office translations. The text is visible to your store's administration panel.
    • Error message translations. The error messages which are displayed in the front office.
  • After clicking on the “Modify” button you will get the screen below. Modify the terms as per your needs.

We can translate terms such as products, categories, CMS page, Menus, SEO & URLs, etc. Here is the guidance for same:

  • Update categories with different languages:
    • On the left menu bar, click Catalog, and then click Categories.
    • Select any category and then click on the edit button.
    • Select language from the language selection. Then Update content ? Save.
    • Follow B and C step for all categories.
    • Categories content will be displayed in multiple languages.

  • Update CMS page content with different languages:
    • On the left menu bar, click Preferences, and then click CMS.
    • Click on the “Edit” button of any page under the “PAGES IN CATEGORY ROOT“ label.
    • Select language from the language selection and update content ? Save.

    • Follow B and C for all CMS pages.
    • Page content will be displayed in multiple languages.
