AI-Powered Livestock Monitoring & Farm Security

AI-Powered Livestock Monitoring & Farm Security

For an 800-head dairy operation running across multiple sheds, Surekha Technologies built a single AI system with two jobs: watch every cow's health and behaviour, and watch the farm itself — catching intrusions, tampering and theft the moment they happen.

Multi Shed & multi-location coverage

One system, two jobs: watch the herd, secure the farm

Standard cameras already covered the property -they just weren't watching anything. Surekha's system reads every feed with Computer Vision, YOLO-based detection, and pose estimation, turning footage into two continuous streams of insight: livestock monitoring for cow health and behaviour, and farm security for people, access and infrastructure.

Monitoring Protocol

Real-time, 24×7 continuous analysis across every connected feed, with per-animal ID and activity-duration tracking

Alerting Mechanism

Automated email notifications carrying event type, camera location, timestamp, evidence snapshot image, and recommended action

Scalability & Roadmap

Built for multi-camera, multi-shed deployment across an 800+ head operation, with a centralized 360° management dashboard on the roadmap

Watching hundreds of animals - and the farm around them - is a job no supervisor can do alone.

The farm runs 800+ cows across multiple sheds and locations, with CCTV already in place and a team of caretakers doing manual rounds. As the herd grew, the gap between what the cameras recorded and what anyone actually saw - on the animals and on the property -grew with it.

Health Monitoring Gaps

  • Early illness indicators went unnoticed during manual visual inspections
  • Critical health issues were caught only after visible, severe symptoms appeared
  • Delayed intervention directly compromised animal well-being and milk yield

Operational Constraints

  • Continuous round-the-clock observation of hundreds of animals was not feasible by hand
  • Manual round inspections were inconsistent and resource-heavy
  • Supervisors could not watch multiple video feeds across several sheds simultaneously

Security & Compliance Risks

  • Unauthorized personnel accessing restricted livestock and milking areas
  • Unmonitored risk of off-hours milk theft and property tampering
  • Animal welfare and abuse concerns, alongside risks of camera obstruction or movement

Two pillars, one engine

The same cameras and the same AI pipeline power both sides of the system -one watching the herd, one watching the farm.

01 / livestock monitoring

Watching the herd

Detection & identification

  • Cow detection and per-animal identification
  • Behaviour tracking and posture analysis

Health monitoring

  • Prolonged inactivity detection
  • Recumbency monitoring
  • Abnormal behavioural patterns

Animal welfare

  • Potential abuse detection
  • Unusual livestock interactions
02 / farm security

Watching the farm

Perimeter & access

  • Human intrusion detection
  • Perimeter breach alerts
  • Restricted-area & unauthorized-milking violations

Infrastructure integrity

  • Camera tampering detection
  • Camera obstruction & movement
  • Feed interruption alerts

Intelligent event detection

Both pillars feed the same detection layer, scored against four event categories, each tuned to trigger a different response.

Health events

  • Prolonged inactivity
  • Abnormal lying duration
  • Potential illness indicators

Operational events

  • Unauthorized milking activity
  • Restricted area violations

Security events

  • Human intrusion
  • Perimeter breaches

Infrastructure events

  • Camera obstruction
  • Camera movement
  • Feed interruption
Health + security intelligence

Bring Smarter Monitoring to the Farm

Combine a cattle health monitoring system with an AI-powered farm security system to detect relevant events across animal health, access, infrastructure, and operations.

-Event type
-Camera location
-Timestamp
-Captured evidence image
-Recommended action

Live detection & behaviour monitoring

Every animal in frame gets an ID and a live posture read. This is an actual detection pass from the deployed system, not a mock-up.

AI livestock detection: individual cows identified with bounding boxes and posture labels -standing, lying, sitting, grazing
Shed camera feed · live inference POSTURE: STANDING / LYING / SITTING / GRAZING
Individual cow IDs assigned and held per animal, per session
Standing, lying, sitting and grazing behaviour classified frame by frame
Movement and activity-duration tracked continuously against a threshold
Example - Cow #5 stays inactive beyond the configured threshold. The system automatically flags the event and initiates an alert workflow for immediate attention.

Every camera feeds one AI pipeline, which fans out into four kinds of events and folds back into a single alert path.

One Analytics Dashboard to View 360-Degree Operations

A centralized console is next on the roadmap, giving farm managers one place to watch, investigate, and configure the whole system.

Live Monitoring

  • Multi-camera view
  • Real-time activity monitoring

Event Management

  • Alert history
  • Incident tracking
  • Event categorization

Reporting & Analytics

  • Health & security alert summaries
  • Behaviour trend analysis
  • Location-wise insights

System Configuration

  • User management
  • Alert thresholds
  • Camera administration
Documented Result A farm that once relied on caretakers glancing at monitors now runs on continuous, automated oversight -early health flags before symptoms show, security and tampering caught as it happens, and a system that scales to new sheds and cameras without adding another pair of eyes.
